First Grade Curriculum

MATH

We follow the Bob Jones University (BJU) math  curriculum.

By the end of this course students will be expected to know:

  •  Addition and Subtraction facts to 18

  • Place Value to 999

    • Adding 1 more, 10 more, 100 more

    • Subtracting 1 less, 10 less, 100 less

    • Comparing 3 digit numbers

  • Money – counting all coins

  • Geometry – plane figures, geometry – solid figures

  • Introduction to Fractions

  • Calendar & Time to the hour and half-hour

  • Addition & Subtraction of 2 & 3 digit numbers

 

BIBLE

We use the Purposeful Design Bible curriculum. By the end of this course students will be expected to know:

  • Weekly Bible memorization

  • Old Testament – Creation, Cain & Abel, Noah, Abraham & Isaac, Jacob & Esau, Moses, 10 commandments, Joshua & Caleb, Gideon, Ruth, Psalms, Elijah, Josiah

  • New Testament - Birth of Christ, Boyhood of Jesus, Lessons from teachings and miracles of Jesus, Easter, leadership and service, witnessing, pleasing & knowing God

PHONICS / LANGUAGE / WRITING

We use the Abeka curriculum. By the end of this course students will be expected to know:

  • Short and long vowels

  • Consonant blends

  • Consonant vowel blends

  • R controlled blends

  • Vowel teams

  • Common prefixes and suffixes

  • Possessives

  • Types of sentences

  • Rhyming words

  • Plurals

  • Ending punctuation

  • Compound words

  • Opposites/antonyms

  • Introduce capitalization rules

  • Introduce syllable rules

  • Alphabetical order

  • Homonyms

  • Writing in complete sentences

  • Beginning story writing using prompts or word banks

PAIDEIA

"Paideia" refers to a holistic approach that nurtures the "whole child" through academics, social-emotional growth, and character development. It involves hands-on, engaging activities that build confidence, critical thinking, and social skills like empathy and collaboration, while fostering a supportive learning community.

By the end of this course students will be expected to:

  • Explain how the diverse perspectives and traditions of families from many cultures have shaped the United States

  • Use geographic terms and tools to describe places and spaces

  • Describe the characteristics of a community and how they are influenced by the environment

  • Understand that individuals work in different types of jobs to earn an income

  • Summarize how effective groups have responsible leaders and team members

  • Identify and explain how the significance of notable people, places, holidays, and civic symbols reflect the origins and values of the government and its citizens

  • Know how to spend, share, and save money
