Second Grade Curriculum

MATH

We follow the Bob Jones University (BJU) math  curriculum.

By the end of this course students will be expected to know:

  • Time to 5 minutes; AM & PM; elapsed time

  • Addition facts to 18; adding 3 digit numbers

  • Subtraction facts to 18; subtracting 3 digit numbers

  • Place value to 4 digit numbers

  • Multiplication facts

  • Division facts

  • Compose and decompose shapes

  • Perimeter

  • English measures of length, capacity, temperature

  • Introduction to metric measurement

  • Comparing fractions

  • Adding and subtracting money

  • Tally, picture, bar, and line graphs

 

BIBLE

We use the Purposeful Design Bible curriculum. By the end of this course students will be expected to know:

  • Weekly Bible memorization

  • Old Testament: Abraham, Moses, Miriam, Joshua, Ruth, David, Elijah, Nehemiah, Ester, Job, Daniel

  • New Testament: Mary & Joseph, Jesus as Shepherd, Martha, Peter, Paul, Barnabus, Silas

GRAMMAR / LANGUAGE

We use the Abeka curriculum. By the end of this course students will be expected to know:

  • Types of Sentences

  • Capitalization Rules

  • Abbreviations

  • Ending punctuation and commas

  • Parts of Speech

  • Subject and Verb agreement

  • Contractions

  • Synonyms

  • Antonyms

  • Homonyms

  • ABC order

  • Dictionary and Glossary skills

PHONICS

We use the Abeka curriculum. By the end of this course students will be expected to know:

  • Review short and long vowels

  • Common spelling rules – ck vs ke; ll, ff, ss, zz; k & c before vowels

  • Base words and suffixes

  • Spelling rules for adding suffixes to base words

  • Syllable division rules

  • Compound words

  • Consonant Blend Review

  • Common dipthongs

  • Prefix rules

PAIDEIA

"Paideia" refers to a holistic approach that nurtures the "whole child" through academics, social-emotional growth, and character development. It involves hands-on, engaging activities that build confidence, critical thinking, and social skills like empathy and collaboration, while fostering a supportive learning community.

By the end of this course students will be expected to:

  • Explain how the diverse perspectives and traditions of families from many cultures have shaped the United States

  • Use geographic terms and tools to describe places and spaces

  • Describe the characteristics of a community and how they are influenced by the environment

  • Understand that individuals work in different types of jobs to earn an income

  • Summarize how effective groups have responsible leaders and team members

  • Identify and explain how the significance of notable people, places, holidays, and civic symbols reflect the origins and values of the government and its citizens

  • Know how to spend, share, and save money
